Cody Simpson reveals what spawned his new career as a fashion designer

Cody Simpson revealed the genesis for his clothing line, Prince Neptune: The Label, on Tuesday.

The Olympic athlete, 25, told Harper’s Bazaar his career as a fashion designer was initially spawned from his love of poetry.

‘I released a collection of poetry [in 2020] and initially, the Prince Neptune name and idea came from the book, because I was actually writing and had planned on releasing the work under that alias,’ he said.

Cody continued: ‘We designed the trident symbol around that and I grew to like it so much that I wanted to broaden it into a larger, multifaceted brand – and my first thought was clothing. So that’s sort of where it began.’

Cody told the publication he started work on the line in 2020, when he began working in fashion with brands and going to shows.

It was there the musician-turned-swimmer ‘developed an understanding and appreciation’ for fashion designers.

Cody announced the launch of Prince Neptune: The Label in June when he modelled several items from his clothing range.

‘I was looking for really comfortable sweats and T-shirts that were sustainably made and I realised just how hard it is to find,’ he said.

‘It was really important for me to stay true to my vision from both a design perspective and what I stand for.

‘We took our time thinking about things like water conservation, using fewer chemicals, compostable packaging and incorporating recycled materials, and did so without compromising comfort and style.

‘This is important to me and, hopefully, to you as well.’
